Mrs. Kröller-Müller was fascinated with the works of Vincent van Gogh. With her husband Anton, she Collected almost 11,500 pieces of art between 1907 and 1922, representing one of the largest 20th century art collections. In 1935, she decided to donate her entire collection to the Netherlands. Three years later, the museum, designed by a Belgian architect named Henry van de Velde, opened. The sculpture garden was added in 1961.
