A visit to Spakenburg is like taking a step back in time. Not only does the small village, located in the north of Bunschoten, consist of farms, rural land and fishing harbors, but it’s one of the few places left in the country where women will still wear local traditional clothing. In fact, this tradition is celebrated every Wednesday Throughout the month of August with the Spakenburg Days, where people gather to dress up in traditional clothing, dance and celebrate. The family-friendly Spakenburg Days also Consists of live music, a market and activities for children, making it one of the most unique things to do in The Netherlands.
But history is not the only thing Spakenburg has to offer, as the village is rich in shopping, dining and wonderful hospitality from the locals. The Spakenburg area, is officially known for three sports teams: the IJsselmeer football team, the SV Spakenburg football team and the BC Shooters basketball squad.
Other popular tourist attractions include the Spakenburg windmill, the Spakenburg Museum and paying a visit to the Spakenburg Saturday Market, an authentic Dutch marketplace offering a variety of shopping, dining and sight-seeing opportunities for visitors.
Spakenburg is also host to more special events throughout the year. These include the Fishery Days in September, Zuidwal Competition or traditional wooden combat ships, Eel Smoking Contests and a day in May where the village’s farming tradition is celebrated.
