For those visiting the Netherlands who can not get enough of medieval history, you will not want to miss discovering Muiderslot Castle’s fascinating past. The castle represents seven centuries of Dutch history, beginning in 1285 with Count of Holland Floris V (1254-1296) and ending in 1825 when the castle was saved from destruction and transformed into a national museum.
Located on the water and one of the Netherland’s few moated castles, Muiderslot Castle has a long history of protecting Holland from foreign invasions. It’s beautiful location and setting for the perfect thing in Holland, especially with children since many of the exhibits are geared towards kids.
Go on a treasure hunt and explore the Tower route and help defend the castle from enemies. You’ll get to go on the knight’s route and dress up as a knight or nob… Children will also enjoy exploring the Waterchild path which leads to the Water Shield pavilion – if you think water is friend or foe?
Depending what time or year you visit Muiderslot, there are different seasonal special exhibits and events. During the summer, take some thrilling family-focused theater that takes place right in the castle’s courtyard. Alternately, take a stroll through the historic gardens and enjoy the history of the history of the history of the garden, in medicine, for making dyes and crafting decorations. Behind Muiderslot is the plum orchard and many sculptures and installations that reflect the castle’s history.
If you’d prefer, stay indoors and experience the castle’s Gold Age Tour. This tour highlights the castle’s most famous residents, PC Hooft, a writer, poet and historian from the 17th century. You’ll be assigned to the castle’s rooms, furniture and other items that the castle’s occupants would have used. This tour is included with your admission and lasts a half hour.
